Chapter 3 - The Black Box Evidence

Matthew gripped the rusted, squeaking wheels of his chair and pushed himself forward with great effort, forcing himself directly into their father’s line of sight.
"You protected yourself, Dad," Matthew spat aggressively, his pale blue eyes blazing with a full decade’s worth of unadulterated hatred and pain.
"You fully knew that the second I took over the board of directors, I was going to immediately order a full, unrestricted forensic audit of your private offshore bank accounts."
Charles immediately lowered his voice, stepping much closer so that only his two sons could clearly hear his next, incredibly venomous words.
"Julian, you need to listen to me very carefully right now before you make a terrible mistake," Charles whispered intensely, his tone shifting completely from defensive to outright threatening.
"Your brother is a deeply sick, delusional man, and he is the sole, absolute reason that your mother is dead today."
Julian physically recoiled at the accusation, feeling exactly as if he had just been punched squarely in the chest by a professional heavyweight fighter.
"What did you just say?" Julian breathed in shock, his brilliant mind struggling to process the sheer, terrifying audacity of the accusation.
Charles leaned in even closer, his gray eyes completely cold and completely unblinking.
"Your brother intentionally caused the plane crash, Julian," Charles stated with chilling conviction.
"He suffered a massive manic episode the night before the flight, and he completely bypassed the private hangar security to actively tamper with the aircraft’s primary fuel lines."
Matthew’s face instantly changed, all the remaining color completely draining from his dirt-streaked cheeks as he stared at the horrible man who had sired him.
"That is a goddamn lie!" Matthew roared loudly, his damaged voice cracking heavily with intense, overwhelming emotional agony.
Charles casually reached into the inner breast pocket of his expensive cashmere coat, his movements incredibly slow and heavily deliberate.
For one terrifying, heart-stopping moment, Julian genuinely thought his father was reaching for a concealed firearm to end this confrontation right here in the shelter.
Instead, Charles slowly removed a meticulously folded, heavily redacted aviation incident report printed on thick, official government paper.
He held it out directly to Julian, his face a perfect mask of solemn, tragic, fatherly regret.
"It is absolutely all right here in the classified NTSB investigator notes, Julian," Charles said quietly, tapping the paper.
"The federal report claims that microscopic traces of intentional sabotage were found on the fuel system, and the hangar security footage placed Matthew near the engine just hours before takeoff."
Julian stared down at the official paper, his hands trembling slightly as he rapidly read the official government seals and the terrifying, damning conclusions written in black ink.
He slowly turned his head, looking back down at the broken brother he had just miraculously found.
Matthew frantically shook his head side to side, his greasy, tangled hair flying wildly around his pale face.
"I wasn’t the target of the sabotage, Julian," Matthew pleaded intensely, his voice breaking into a desperate, heartbreaking sob.
Julian frowned deeply, his brow furrowing in deep, agonizing confusion at the contradictory statements.
"What exactly does that mean?" Julian asked, his voice barely a whisper over the ambient, chaotic noise of the crowded shelter.
Matthew didn't attempt to answer with mere words.
Instead, he aggressively opened his worn canvas backpack once again, his scarred hands digging incredibly deep into the bottom compartment.
He carefully removed a heavy, severely scorched piece of solid metal that looked exactly like it had been subjected to the intense, melting heat of a blast furnace.
It was a heavily damaged, military-grade black box flight recorder, miraculously recovered from the fiery wreckage of the Alaskan crash site.
"I secretly hired a private, off-the-books recovery team to find this before Dad’s people could sanitize the mountain," Matthew explained, his hands shaking violently as he held the heavy device.
Charles immediately went ashen pale, his perfectly maintained corporate composure completely shattering into pieces as he stared at the scorched metal box in horror.
Matthew pressed a small, crude bypass button that he had clearly wired directly into the side of the damaged electronic device.
A loud, screeching burst of electronic static instantly filled the quiet corner of the shelter, making several people nearby physically cover their ears in sharp pain.
Then, cutting clearly and undeniably through the hissing static, a recorded voice came booming through the damaged internal speaker.
It was Charles’s voice, sounding significantly younger, but undeniably, unmistakably his.
The horrific audio recording captured Charles speaking directly to the private pilot, his tone completely cold, highly calculated, and terrifyingly precise.
"Change the route immediately over the mountain pass, cut the secondary fuel line exactly when you hit the high altitude marker, and make absolutely sure you do not say a single word to my wife," the recorded voice of Charles ordered ruthlessly.
Julian stared blankly at his father, his entire world, his entire understanding of his life, violently fracturing into a million irreparable pieces in a single second.
"My mother was on that plane, Charles," Julian whispered brokenly, a single, hot tear finally spilling completely over his cheek.
Charles said absolutely nothing, his jaw locked incredibly tight as he fully realized that ten years of meticulous, bloody cover-ups had just evaporated in an instant.
For his entire adult life, Julian had been explicitly told that his mother had tragically died because of an unexpected, brutal winter storm over the Alaskan mountains.
Matthew looked up sadly at his younger brother, his eyes reflecting the exact same agonizing grief that Julian was currently feeling.
"The intentional crash wasn’t meant to kill me, Julian," Matthew said very softly.
He held out the heavy, scorched recorder, offering it directly to Julian like a sacred, terrible artifact of pure truth.
"It was meant entirely to kill Mom before she could go to the federal authorities and officially expose what Dad had been secretly doing with the company."
The sheer, suffocating weight of the massive revelation hit Julian with the devastating, crushing force of a runaway freight train.
His hands began to shake completely uncontrollably, not from the freezing temperature inside the shelter, but from a profound, world-shattering sense of ultimate betrayal.
"What exactly had she discovered?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal register that made the hairs on the back of Matthew’s neck stand straight up.
Matthew carefully placed the damaged black box back onto his lap and aggressively unzipped the front pocket of his weathered backpack.

He pulled out a thick, plastic-wrapped folder that was visibly bulging with hundreds of disorganized, heavily encrypted financial ledgers and printed corporate server logs.
"Our loving father spent the last twenty years utilizing Cross Technologies as a massive, illegal data harvesting farm," Matthew explained, handing the heavy folder to his shocked brother.
