Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

The two devastating words hung heavily in the freezing air of the shelter, striking Julian with the physical force of a sledgehammer to the chest.

After the catastrophic private plane crash that had tragically taken their mother's life, Matthew had awoken from a terrifying three-week medical coma with a severe traumatic brain injury and a completely shattered, unsalvageable left leg.

While Matthew was heavily sedated on powerful painkillers and fighting for his very life on a hospital ventilator, their ruthless father, Charles Cross, had moved incredibly quickly and quietly through the corrupt legal system.

Charles secretly bribed top-tier, unethical psychiatrists and completely manipulated the family courts to obtain absolute, permanent legal guardianship over his eldest, incapacitated son.

He expertly convinced the business world, the media, and a young Julian that Matthew was dangerously unstable, highly violent, and completely unfit to hold onto his massive percentage of the company's voting shares.

Charles then forcibly and illegally sold all of Matthew’s corporate equity, transferring the billions of dollars into a highly secretive, impenetrable private trust fund that he solely controlled without any oversight.

Once the massive fortune was securely hidden away, Charles began transferring Matthew like a piece of unwanted, broken luggage between a series of horrific, unregulated private psychiatric facilities scattered across the country.

He utilized fake names, expertly forged medical records, and heavy daily doses of chemical tranquilizers to ensure that absolutely nobody ever knew where the true, rightful heir to Cross Technologies was hiding.

"I finally managed to orchestrate an escape exactly four years ago," Matthew explained quietly, pulling the thin, dirty blanket much tighter around his trembling, frail shoulders.

"A sympathetic night nurse working in a terrible facility in Nevada realized I wasn't actually insane, and she purposefully left a side security door unlocked during a busy shift change."

Julian shook his head frantically, desperately trying to reject this horrifying, nightmarish reality about the father he had blindly trusted and loved.

"Why didn’t you try to contact me the second you got out, Matthew?" Julian pleaded emotionally, hot tears finally welling in his eyes and threatening to spill over.

"If I had known you were alive and in danger, I would have burned this entire city to the ground to find you and bring you home."

"I did contact you, Julian," Matthew replied immediately, holding Julian's panicked gaze with absolute, unwavering intensity and truth.

Julian shook his head again, refusing to believe that he could have ever ignored his brother.

"No, you absolutely didn't, I swear to you on my life, I never received a single message, not a single phone call, absolutely nothing," Julian defended himself passionately.

Matthew slowly reached a heavily scarred, calloused hand into a worn, dirty canvas backpack that was hanging loosely from the back handle of his rusted wheelchair.

He pulled out a thick, heavy stack of crumpled, severely weathered printed papers and dropped them directly onto Julian’s lap without a word.

"There are hundreds of them right there, Julian," Matthew said quietly, pointing a dirty finger at the stack of documents.

Julian carefully picked up the delicate papers with trembling hands, his eyes widening as he realized exactly what he was looking at.

They were physical, printed copies of internal corporate emails, and every single one of them was addressed directly to Julian's highly classified, direct personal inbox at Cross Technologies.

Julian rapidly read the frantic, desperate pleas for help printed on the pages, detailing the horrific abuse, the secret hospital locations, and the terrifying truth about their father's betrayal.

But it wasn't the incredibly tragic content of the letters that made Julian’s blood run entirely cold in his veins.

It was the tiny, highly encrypted alphanumeric security footer automatically printed at the absolute bottom of every single page.

Julian recognized that specific string of code immediately, primarily because he had personally written the complex algorithm that generated it years ago.

It was the internal corporate security quarantine code utilized exclusively by Cross Technologies' highest-level, most secure email servers.

Someone hiding deep inside his own company, someone possessing maximum executive override clearance, had intentionally intercepted, blocked, and permanently deleted every single one of Matthew’s desperate cries for help before they ever reached Julian’s desk.

"Who in the hell did this to you?" Julian growled aggressively, a dark, lethal corporate rage suddenly igniting deep within his chest.

Matthew didn't answer his brother's question right away.

Instead, he looked slowly past Julian's broad shoulder, his pale blue eyes locking intensely onto the heavy glass double doors positioned at the front entrance of the homeless shelter.

Julian immediately followed his brother’s gaze, his heart sinking rapidly as he saw who had just arrived.

Stepping confidently out of the howling, freezing blizzard and into the dim, buzzing light of the shelter was their powerful father, Charles Cross.

Charles was impeccably dressed in a dark, perfectly tailored cashmere overcoat, leaning heavily and elegantly on a custom-made silver walking cane.

He looked exactly as he always did in the boardroom: incredibly powerful, completely untouchable, and entirely in control of the frantic world revolving around him.

Julian stood up very slowly, his impressive six-foot-two frame towering over the surrounding crowd of people, his hands clenched into tight fists until his knuckles turned stark white.

He stepped firmly and aggressively between his approaching father and his broken brother, forming an impenetrable human shield.

"What the hell are you doing here, Charles?" Julian demanded loudly, dropping the respectful familial title entirely.

Charles completely ignored Julian's aggressive tone, his cold, calculating gray eyes fixing entirely on Matthew sitting in the wheelchair, carefully noting the news cameras and the watching crowd.

His jaw tightened just a tiny fraction of an inch, which was the only visible sign that his carefully constructed empire was currently teetering on the edge of complete annihilation.

"Julian, we are leaving this disgusting place right now," Charles commanded smoothly, his tone dripping with a perfectly rehearsed, false sense of paternal concern.

"We urgently need to handle your brother's severe medical episode privately, before he completely loses his mind and hurts himself or someone else in this room."

Julian planted his expensive leather boots firmly onto the concrete floor, refusing to yield even a single inch of space to his father.

"You told me he abandoned us and took his money to Europe," Julian stated loudly, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that echoed easily over the whistling wind outside.

"You looked me directly in the eyes, you stood beside me at Mom’s funeral, and you told me that Matthew had selfishly turned his back on this family forever."

Charles maintained an expression of absolute, perfectly practiced calm, casually adjusting the wide lapels of his heavy cashmere overcoat with a steady, gloved hand.

"Matthew was horribly, violently ill after the crash, Julian," Charles replied confidently, his tone incredibly smooth, reasonable, and dripping with perfectly feigned sorrow.

"The severe head trauma he sustained in the Alaska mountains completely fractured his mind, and the top psychiatrists told me that keeping him in the public eye would only accelerate his mental decline."

Julian felt a hot, blinding wave of absolute fury wash over his entire body, turning his vision momentarily red with pure rage.

"You stole his company shares, Charles!" Julian barked loudly, his voice rising in volume, no longer caring about the public spectacle they were creating for the cameras.

"You manipulated a grieving family, you secretly bought off the medical board, and you locked your own flesh and blood in a cage so you could seize absolute control of the company."

Charles’s jaw clenched tightly, and for a fleeting, microscopic second, the mask of the grieving, benevolent patriarch slipped away, revealing the ruthless corporate dictator hiding beneath.

"I protected the company, Julian," Charles countered sharply, taking a sudden, aggressive step forward to assert his dominance.

"I protected the massive legacy that I built from the ground up, ensuring that a mentally incompetent boy didn't accidentally burn our entire empire to ashes in a fit of psychotic rage."

A harsh, incredibly bitter laugh suddenly erupted from the dark shadows behind Julian.
