Chapter 6 - The Digital War

The highly secure safe house was completely hidden deep within the dense, snow-covered pine forests surrounding the icy waters of Puget Sound.

Julian had secretly purchased the heavily fortified cabin years ago entirely under a complex web of anonymous shell corporations.

He had always known, deep down in his subconscious, that a day might come when he would need to vanish without a single trace.

The cabin was entirely off the grid, fully powered by a massive underground generator and equipped with military-grade satellite communication arrays.

As soon as they walked through the heavy steel door, Julian immediately transformed the massive oak dining table into a high-tech command center.

He rapidly unpacked three heavily encrypted laptop computers from his waterproof tactical bag and began booting up multiple secure servers.

Matthew sat quietly by the crackling stone fireplace, finally feeling the genuine warmth of a safe, secure home for the first time in a decade.

Julian brought him a steaming mug of black coffee, carefully watching his brother’s scarred hands wrap tightly around the warm ceramic.

"I am going to completely dismantle our internal corporate firewall right now," Julian announced, his fingers hovering rapidly over the glowing keyboard.

"I need to actively trace the exact digital pathway that the internal mole used to completely quarantine and delete your desperate emails."

Matthew took a slow, agonizing sip of the hot coffee, his pale blue eyes staring intensely into the dancing orange flames of the fire.

"The person who blocked my emails is the exact same person who helped Dad launder the blood money through the offshore accounts," Matthew stated coldly.

Julian nodded in absolute agreement, launching a highly aggressive, deeply complex diagnostic algorithm that he had personally written in college.

Lines of bright green code began scrolling frantically across the three black screens, rapidly bypassing the company's incredibly strict security protocols.

Julian was essentially hacking directly into his own multi-billion dollar corporation, ruthlessly tearing down the massive digital walls he had built.

"The internal override command was executed exactly four years ago, originating from a highly restricted terminal on the executive floor," Julian muttered, his eyes darting across the data.

"Only three people in the entire company possessed the Level 9 security clearance required to authorize a permanent quarantine of a CEO-directed email."

"It was me, it was our father, and it was Arthur Vance," Julian concluded, feeling a sudden, sickening drop in his stomach.

Arthur Vance was the highly respected Chief Operating Officer of Cross Technologies and their father’s most trusted, loyal right-hand man for thirty years.

He had practically helped raise Julian, teaching him how to play chess on Sunday afternoons and guiding him through the brutal realities of corporate finance.

"Uncle Arthur," Matthew whispered completely bitterly, the familiar, affectionate childhood title tasting like pure, toxic ash in his mouth.

"He actively watched me suffer in those horrible, abusive facilities, and he chose to completely protect Dad's illegal data empire instead of saving my life."

Julian felt a massive, uncontrollable wave of absolute disgust completely wash over him as he rapidly typed a new series of destructive commands.

"I am completely revoking his executive access right now, locking him entirely out of the mainframe, and permanently freezing his digital footprint," Julian declared ruthlessly.

Suddenly, a loud, piercing alarm chimed aggressively from the cabin’s automated perimeter defense system.

Red warning lights instantly began flashing wildly across the digital security monitors mounted near the front door.

Julian immediately drew a heavy, loaded Glock 19 from a hidden compartment under the desk and aggressively racked the slide.

He checked the live infrared security feed, completely expecting to see a heavily armed team of corporate assassins moving through the dark, snowy woods.

Instead, the thermal camera clearly showed a single, solitary figure standing completely still in the freezing snow near the front gate.

It was Arthur Vance, standing entirely alone with his hands raised completely empty in the freezing winter air.
