Chapter 3 - The Trauma Ward

While Julian was dragged kicking and screaming into the back of a squad car, an ambulance arrived to treat Maya. By the time we reached the hospital, her core temperature had plummeted to dangerous levels. The doctors hooked her up to heated IV fluids and carefully documented every bruise, every scrape, and every mark Julian had left on her fragile body.
I sat in the plastic chair beside her hospital bed, holding her uninjured hand. The fierce, brilliant girl who had graduated at the top of her university class looked so small beneath the sterile white blankets.
"I'm sorry, Dad," she whispered, tears finally breaking through her exhaustion. "I was so ashamed. He changed so much after the wedding. He isolated me. He took my debit cards. He told me I was nothing without him."
"You have nothing to be ashamed of, Maya," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "Abusers don't target weak women. They target strong women because breaking them makes them feel powerful. But he didn't break you. You survived."
"He’s going to take the house," she sobbed. "He told me he had his lawyers draft papers making him the primary owner last year. I signed them because I was terrified."
I squeezed her hand, a cold, predatory smile touching my lips. "Maya, I spent thirty-two years auditing the most complex corporate fraud in the country. Did you really think I would hand over a ten-million-dollar estate without a failsafe?"
Her tear-filled eyes widened in confusion.
"Those papers he forced you to sign are completely worthless," I explained. "The holding company is structured under a 'Dead Hand' provision. No asset can be transferred, sold, or modified without the secondary signature of the trust's executor."
May you like
"Who is the executor?" she asked.
"Me," I said. "And tomorrow morning, Julian’s entire world is going to collapse."
