Chapter 14 - The Trial Begins
Six months later, the federal criminal trial of Julian Vance began.
The media circus was intense. The story of a wealthy, arrogant CEO who tortured his wife and stole millions from investors had captured national attention.
Maya and I sat in the front row of the federal courthouse. Maya looked stunning. She wore a sharp, tailored navy suit, her hair pulled back, her posture impeccable. She radiated power and confidence.
Julian sat at the defense table. He looked twenty years older. His hair was thinning, his skin was pale and sallow from months in county lockup, and his eyes darted nervously around the room.
The prosecution’s opening statement was devastating. The Assistant US Attorney laid out the timeline of Julian’s fraud, his embezzlement to his mistress, and the horrific domestic abuse he used to maintain control over his wife’s assets.
Julian’s defense lawyer tried to argue that Julian was a victim of corporate mismanagement and a manipulative wife, but it fell completely flat. The jury looked at Julian with undisguised disgust.
Then, the prosecution called their star witness.

Chloe Vance walked into the courtroom, refusing to look at her brother. In exchange for immunity regarding the burglary charges and full protection, Chloe had agreed to testify against Julian.
She took the stand and detailed exactly how Julian had bragged about stealing investor funds. She testified about the fake shell companies and the offshore accounts. Julian glared at his sister with pure hatred, but he was utterly powerless to stop her.
