Chapter 20 - The Shoes

Later that afternoon, I was walking Maya back to her office building.

We stopped at a crosswalk, waiting for the light to change. The city was alive with energy, the sun reflecting off the glass skyscrapers.

I looked down. Maya was wearing a pair of stunning, bright red designer heels. They were bold, confident, and absolutely unapologetic.

"New shoes?" I asked, a knowing smile tugging at the corner of my mouth.

Maya looked down at her feet, then back up at me, her smile radiant and fierce.

"Yeah," she said. "I bought them with my own money. And I didn't ask anyone for permission."

The light turned green. Maya stepped off the curb, her head held high, walking confidently into her future, leaving the ghosts of her past permanently behind in the dust.

And as I watched her walk away, I knew with absolute certainty that no one would ever make my daughter feel small again.
