Chapter 15 - Maya takes the Stand
On the third day of the trial, Maya was called to testify regarding the domestic abuse and financial coercion charges.
When she walked to the witness stand, the entire courtroom fell silent. Julian shrank back in his chair, unable to meet her gaze.
Maya swore the oath and sat down.
The prosecutor gently guided her through the history of the marriage. Maya spoke clearly and firmly. She detailed the emotional manipulation, the isolation, and the financial control.
"Mrs. Vance, can you describe the events of the evening in question?" the prosecutor asked.
Maya took a deep breath. She didn't cry. She didn't shake.
"I bought a pair of shoes for a job interview," Maya told the jury. "My husband discovered the receipt. He dragged me outside into the freezing sleet. He locked the door. He told me I was going to stay out there until I learned my place."
The jury visibly winced.
"Did he attempt to force you to sign over the estate prior to this event?"
"Yes," Maya answered. "He threatened to institutionalize me if I didn't sign the transfer documents. He wanted the estate to leverage as collateral for his failing business."
Julian’s lawyer stood up for cross-examination, attempting to rattle her. "Isn't it true, Maya, that you are just a vindictive woman who orchestrated this entire scandal because you were jealous of his success?"
Maya leaned forward into the microphone.

"I am a survivor who finally saw him for what he really was," Maya said, her voice ringing like a bell through the silent courtroom. "He wasn't successful. He was a thief. And he wasn't strong. He was a coward who could only feel big by making me feel small. I am not vindictive, counselor. I am just telling the truth."
The defense attorney swallowed hard and sat down. Maya had won.
