Chapter 5 - The Ambush

Julian didn't ask questions. The sheer terror in Clara’s eyes was enough. Within seconds, they were in the back of the armored SUV, tearing down the FDR Drive. Julian was on the phone, barking orders to Marcus to lock down the estate and mobilize the tactical team.
“How did you know?” Julian demanded, turning to Clara.
“I overheard Moretti on the balcony,” she said, shaking violently. “They’re hitting your convoy on the bridge as a distraction.”
Suddenly, the SUV jolted violently. Sparks rained down as a heavy reinforced truck slammed into their side. The windows spider-webbed, but the bulletproof glass held. Gunfire erupted in the street.
“Get down!” Julian roared, shoving Clara to the floorboards and covering her body with his own. His heavy weight was a terrifying, protective shield. He drew his weapon, firing back through the gunports.
Clara squeezed her eyes shut, but instead of panicking, she grabbed the spare magazine from the seat pocket and shoved it into Julian’s hand. He paused, looking down at her in shock.

“I’m Carlo Bianchi’s daughter,” she confessed, breathless over the gunfire. “I know how this world works. Just get us back to the boys.”
Julian’s eyes flashed with a lethal, dark promise. He slammed the magazine home. “Hold on to me.”
