Chapter 12 - Elena's Blessing

Julian read the elegant, familiar handwriting.

“My dearest Julian. If you are reading this, my illness has finally won. I know you will close your heart. I know you will build walls of ice to protect the boys. But Julian, please, do not let them grow up in the dark. Find someone who can make you laugh again. Find someone who doesn't fear the shadows, but brings the light. Love again, Julian. For me, and for our sons.”

A single tear slipped down Julian’s cheek. He looked up at Clara, who was watching him with gentle, understanding eyes.

“She knew,” Julian whispered. “She knew I would break.”

“She knew you would heal,” Clara corrected softly. She stepped forward, wrapping her arms around his waist.

Julian pulled her close, burying his face in her hair. The ghost of his past had finally given him permission to live in the present. He let go of the guilt he had carried for ten months. He looked at Clara, realizing that the woman the agency sent as a mistake was the greatest miracle of his life.

“I’m done with the shadows, Clara,” he vowed.
