Chapter 5

Julian lowered his weapon slowly, his dark eyes fixed on Elara.

She didn't look like a hero; she looked mildly inconvenienced by the blood on her sensible loafers.

"You missed a spot on the ledger, Mr. Moretti," she said softly, completely ignoring the bodies.

Julian stared at her, the gears in his brilliant mind turning at lightning speed.

"Who exactly are you, Elara?" he demanded, his voice dangerously low.

She sighed, a quiet sound that held years of exhaustion.

"I am the woman who ensures your schedule remains uninterrupted," she replied evenly.

Downstairs, Elias and the guards had managed to repel the initial wave of Dante’s men.

The surviving attackers were retreating into the blizzard, leaving their dead behind in the snow.

Elias sprinted up the stairs, his face smeared with soot and blood, expecting to find his boss dead.

Instead, he found Julian standing over three corpses, with Elara quietly straightening her cardigan nearby.

Elias stopped dead in his tracks, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief.

"What the hell happened here?" Elias breathed, looking from the bodies to Julian.

"It appears my secretary has hidden talents," Julian said, never taking his eyes off Elara.

Elias looked at Elara, remembering the time he had noticed her phantom-like silence in the lounge.

She wasn't a ghost because she was meek; she was a ghost because she was trained to be invisible.

"We need to clean this up," Elara said practically, adjusting her tortoiseshell glasses.

Julian finally smiled, a cold, sharp curve of his lips.
