Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

I sat on the edge of the frozen patio furniture and frantically shoved my feet into my boots.
Just as I finished lacing them, a bright, blinding light flooded the entire backyard.
The motion sensors had been tripped.
"Going somewhere, Elena?"
The voice came from the open doorway behind me, completely devoid of sleep or intoxication.
I spun around, nearly slipping on the icy concrete.
Garrett was standing in the doorway, holding a heavy, black handgun by his side.
He had not been asleep; he had been waiting for me to make my move.
"Did you really think I didn't notice you sneaking into my office, you stupid bitch?" he snarled.
He stepped out into the cold, raising the weapon slightly.
"I saw the security logs. You opened my safe."
My blood turned to absolute ice in my veins.
"Let me go, Garrett," I pleaded, backing away slowly into the deep snow.
"You are not going anywhere," he laughed, a cruel, manic sound that echoed in the quiet night.
"You are going back inside, and we are leaving for Aspen right now."

He lunged forward, grabbing my broken arm with vicious, terrifying strength.
I screamed in pure agony, dropping to my knees in the snow.
