Chapter 13 - The Midnight Escape

At exactly 1:45 AM, I silently rolled out of the massive bed.

My heart was beating so loudly I was terrified it would wake him.

I did not put on shoes, opting to walk in thick socks to eliminate any sound on the hardwood floors.

I crept down the long, dark hallway, holding my heavy cast against my chest to keep it from bumping the walls.

I reached the mudroom and quietly slipped my heavy winter coat over my layered clothing.

I grabbed my snow boots, deciding to put them on only after I was safely outside.

Noah had texted me the exact extraction plan.

He was parked three blocks away in an unmarked rental car with the headlights completely off.

I had to disable the back door alarm without triggering the silent alert to Garrett’s phone.

I typed in the master override code I had memorized months ago: 7-7-2-1.

The small red light on the keypad turned green, and the heavy deadbolt clicked unlocked.

I pushed the door open, the freezing winter air hitting my face like a physical blow.

I stepped out onto the snowy patio, the cold immediately seeping through my socks.

I was finally outside the golden cage, but the nightmare was far from over.
