Chapter 10 - The Close Call

I had less than sixty seconds before he unlocked the front door.

I slipped out of the office, locked the door silently behind me, and sprinted down the hallway.

I practically threw the silver key back into the hollowed-out book in the library.

I ran toward the master bedroom, my heavy cast throwing off my balance and making me clumsy.

I heard the front door handle jiggle just as I dove under the thick duvet of the bed.

I shoved the burner phone deep into my pillowcase and squeezed my eyes shut.

The heavy, aggressive footsteps echoed loudly against the hardwood floors of the foyer.

"Elena?" Garrett called out, his voice sharp and suspicious.

I slowed my breathing, forcing my chest to rise and fall in a slow, rhythmic pattern.

The bedroom door opened violently, hitting the wall with a loud thud.

Garrett stood in the doorway, breathing heavily, smelling strongly of rain and cheap anger.

He walked over to the bed and stared down at me for what felt like an eternity.

I kept my eyes firmly closed, praying he couldn't hear the frantic, terrified beating of my heart.

He reached out and traced his cold finger down the side of my face.

"Such a perfect, quiet little wife," he whispered into the dark room.

He walked into the bathroom to shower, completely unaware that his perfect wife had just secured his total destruction.
