Chapter 15 - The Transfusion

The underground medical wing of the Moretti estate looked like a state-of-the-art hospital. Dr. Thorne and his team were waiting with scrub nurses and anesthesiologists.
They wheeled the twins, pale and unconscious, into the sterile glass room. Clara carried Lily in, laying her gently on the adjacent medical bed.
“You’re going to go to sleep for a little while, sweetheart,” Dr. Thorne smiled warmly, administering the mild anesthetic. “When you wake up, you’ll be a hero.”
Clara held Lily’s hand until the girl’s eyes fluttered shut. Julian stood on the other side of the glass, his hands pressed against the cold pane, watching his entire world hang in the balance.
For four agonizing hours, the medical team worked. They extracted the precious bone marrow from Lily and began the delicate process of infusing it into the twins.
Clara stepped out of the surgical theater, pulling off her sterile mask. She walked over to Julian, who was pacing the corridor like a caged lion.
“They are doing well,” Clara whispered, placing a gentle hand on his arm.
Julian stopped pacing. He looked down at her, the exhaustion and fear stripping away the final layers of his hardened exterior. Without a word, he pulled Clara against his chest, wrapping his massive arms around her, burying his face in her neck.

“I owe you my life,” Julian choked out, his voice thick with unshed tears. “I owe you my soul.”
“You saved us, Julian,” Clara replied, hugging him back fiercely. “We saved each other.”
