Chapter 9 - The Sentencing

The judge, a stern man with zero tolerance for violence against children, demanded total silence in the courtroom.
Julian stood up, his knees visibly shaking as he faced the absolute end of his life as a free man.
“Julian Montgomery, you have been found guilty of aggravated assault, grand theft, and child endangerment,” the judge boomed.
“Your actions were calculated, malicious, and incredibly cowardly.”
The judge looked directly into Julian’s terrified eyes, displaying absolutely no mercy for the former executive.
“I am sentencing you to fifteen years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of early parole.”
Julian’s knees finally buckled, and he collapsed into his chair, sobbing loudly as the harsh reality shattered his world.
His mother, Eleanor, wailed from the back of the courtroom, finally realizing her money could not save her monster of a son.
But the judge wasn't finished handing out the consequences of this disastrous event.
“Furthermore, you are ordered to pay two million dollars in punitive damages to the victim’s family,” the judge added.
Julian had absolutely no money left, which meant his wages in prison would be garnished for the rest of his miserable life.
The bailiffs hauled him up by his armpits and dragged him out of the courtroom while the cameras flashed aggressively.
I leaned down and kissed Emma’s forehead, gently tracing the tiny, faded scar above her eyebrow.
“The bad man is going away for a very long time, sweetheart,” I whispered into her ear.
Emma smiled brightly, squeezing my hand with her tiny fingers.

“I know, Mommy. You always protect me,” she replied happily.
Justice had been served, cold and absolutely merciless, just the way I had promised.
