Chapter 2 - The Arrest and the Hospital

Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand windows of the banquet hall.
Five uniformed police officers stormed through the front doors with their hands resting on their holsters.
The venue manager immediately handed the tablet over to the lead officer.
It took the police exactly thirty seconds of watching the footage to understand the entire situation.
Two officers yanked Julian off the floor and violently slammed him against the marble pillar.
The metallic click of handcuffs echoing through the silent room was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard.
“Julian Montgomery, you are under arrest for grand theft, child endangerment, and aggravated assault,” the officer announced loudly.
Julian began weeping like a coward, begging Beatrice to call his expensive lawyers.
Beatrice simply turned her back on him, refusing to even acknowledge his pathetic existence.
I didn't care about his tears; my only focus was the blood seeping through the silk napkin on Emma’s forehead.
Paramedics rushed into the venue, gently lifting my brave little girl onto a stretcher.
I held her tiny hand as they loaded us into the back of the flashing ambulance.
“It hurts, Mommy,” Emma whimpered as the vehicle sped toward the nearest trauma center.
“I know, my sweet angel, but you are so incredibly brave,” I murmured, kissing her knuckles.
Inside my heart, a dark and ferocious protective instinct was rapidly awakening.
Julian thought he was attacking a defenseless single mother with no power or influence.
He had absolutely no idea that I was Claire Sterling, the ruthless CEO of the largest real estate conglomerate in the state.
I wore simple clothes to events because I despised flashy displays of wealth.
But I had enough money and legal firepower to bury Julian and his entire bloodline.
As the emergency room doors swung open to receive my daughter, I pulled out my phone.

I sent a single text message to my head of security and my lead corporate attorney.
"Julian Montgomery is going to lose everything he has ever loved by tomorrow morning."
