Chapter 5 - The Aftermath

The house was swarming with Constantine's men, cleaning up the mess left by the failed assassination attempt.
Josie sat on the edge of the sofa in the study, her hands shaking so badly she couldn't hold the glass of water she'd been given.
Constantine paced the room like a caged panther, issuing rapid-fire orders in Russian over his phone.
When he finally hung up, he turned to Josie, his expression a mix of rage and absolute terror.
He crossed the room in two strides, dropping to his knees in front of her.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his large hands frantically checking her arms and face for injuries.
"I'm fine," she whispered, her voice cracking under the adrenaline crash.
"Mila is safe in the panic room."
Constantine pulled her against his chest, wrapping his arms around her tightly.
It was an embrace of sheer desperation, the walls of the terrifying mafia boss completely crumbling away.
"I thought I lost you," he confessed into her hair, his voice rough with emotion.
"I promised myself I would never care for anyone again after Mila's mother died."
Josie rested her head on his broad shoulder, realizing she was falling in love with Boston's most dangerous man.

"You didn't lose us," she told him fiercely.
"But you need to end this war before it ends us."
