Chapter 4 - The Intrusion

The peace of the Voss estate shattered on a Tuesday afternoon when Constantine was away meeting with the syndicate.
Josie was in the conservatory, helping Mila paint a picture of a sunflower, when the perimeter alarms began to shriek.
A frantic bodyguard burst through the double doors, his weapon drawn and his face pale.
"The Russians breached the west gate," he yelled over the blaring sirens.
"Take Mila to the panic room, now!"
Josie didn't hesitate, scooping the little girl into her arms and sprinting down the long, carpeted hallway.
Gunfire echoed from the front courtyard, sharp and terrifyingly loud.
She reached the hidden doorway behind the library bookshelf just as heavy boots pounded on the marble stairs behind them.
"Mama, I'm scared," Mila cried, burying her face in Josie's neck.
It was the first time the child had called her that, but Josie couldn't process the emotion right now.
She shoved Mila into the reinforced steel room, grabbing a heavy brass fireplace poker from the hearth.
A massive man with a scarred face stepped into the library, raising a suppressed pistol.
Josie swung the brass poker with all her might, striking the man's wrist and sending the gun clattering across the floor.

Before the intruder could retaliate, a deafening shot rang out, and the man collapsed.
Constantine stood in the doorway, a smoking gun in his hand, his eyes blazing with a murderous, unholy fury.
