Chapter 2 - The Estate

The Voss estate was a fortress of black stone and wrought iron tucked away in the wealthy hills of Brookline.
Josie stepped out of the tinted SUV, clutching her duffel bag while a private ambulance carefully transported her brother inside.
She had spent the entire night agonizing over her decision, but the sight of Liam smiling as the paramedics hooked him up to state-of-the-art machines made it worth it.
Constantine was waiting in the grand foyer, dressed in a charcoal suit that made him look like a dark prince.
"Your brother has a private nurse and the best nephrologist in the country on call," he announced as she approached.
"Thank you," Josie breathed, genuinely overwhelmed by the sudden reversal of her tragic fortunes.
"Do not thank me yet," he warned, his jaw tightening.
"My world is dangerous, and by entering this house, you are now a part of it."
Mila came running down the sweeping mahogany staircase, wearing a fluffy pink dress instead of her usual gloomy coats.
She threw her arms around Josie's legs, burying her face in the worn denim of her jeans.
Constantine watched the interaction, that strange, ghost-like warmth flickering in his eyes again.
"Your primary duty is Mila," he instructed, his voice softening just a fraction.
"Keep her fed, keep her safe, and do not ask questions about who comes and goes through the back doors."
May you like
Josie nodded, running a hand through Mila's dark curls.
She knew she was dancing with the devil, but for the first time in years, she didn't feel alone.
