Chapter 7 - The Search Warrant

I couldn't officially work Sarah’s case due to a conflict of interest, but Detective Carver owed me his life from a shootout three years ago. I marched into his office and shut the door.

"Carver, Mark is trying to financially ruin her. I need you to execute a search warrant on their house. Not just for the assault evidence. For his home office. The guy is too cocky. He’s hiding something."

Carver sighed, rubbing his tired eyes. "Elena, the judge barely gave us the warrant for the assault. Digging into his finances without probable cause is a fishing expedition. Sterling will have it thrown out."

"Then find probable cause," I demanded. "Mark claims Sarah was having a manic episode and throwing things. She says he threw her into the glass table. Look at the blood spatter. Look at the trajectory. The physical evidence will prove he lied in his police statement. That gives you leverage to seize his personal electronics to prove premeditation."

Carver looked at me, a slow smile spreading across his face. "You're a terrifying woman, Vance."

"Get the warrant, Carver. Before he destroys whatever is on that laptop."

Four hours later, Carver’s team kicked the door in on Mark’s suburban mansion. Mark wasn't home, but his encrypted desktop computer, three burner phones, and a physical ledger hidden in a floor safe were all seized and bagged for evidence.
