"You know," Sarah said softly, looking out at the city lights. "I never really thanked you."

"For what?" I asked, bumping my shoulder against hers. "Making you eat my terrible cooking?"

"For not listening to me," she smiled, tears shining in her eyes. "For kicking that door down when I was too weak to open it. You saved my life, Elena."

"I'm a cop, Sarah," I whispered into her hair. "It's my job to save people."

I pulled back and looked at my twin sister, seeing my own strength reflected perfectly in her eyes.

"But I'm your sister first," I said fiercely. "And no one, ever, gets to hurt you while I'm breathing."

The city hummed below us, vast and alive. We stood side by side in the cool night air, two halves of a whole, absolutely unbroken, and completely free.
