Chapter 10 - The FBI Safehouse

I didn't trust the local precinct. Mark had too much money, and the Petrov syndicate had too many cops on their payroll. I drove us three hours out of the city to a federal field office where I had a contact in the organized crime division—Agent Miller.

I slammed the ledger onto Miller’s desk.

"My sister’s husband is washing money for the Petrovs. His lawyer is trying to bury a domestic violence charge, but I found his books. I need federal protection for my sister, and I need it ten minutes ago."

Miller looked at the ledger, his eyes lighting up like a kid at Christmas. The FBI had been trying to build a case against the Petrovs for five years.

"This is the holy grail, Vance," Miller breathed. "If this math holds up, we can indict the entire syndicate."

"I don't care about your indictments," I snapped. "I care about Sarah. Mark hired someone to photograph her inside my apartment. They are hunting her to force her to drop the assault charges so the initial search warrant gets invalidated."

Miller nodded, entirely serious. "We have a secure safehouse in the mountains. No internet, no cell service, armed guards 24/7. Your sister goes there tonight. But Elena... you can't go with her."

"Like hell I can't," I argued.

"You're a known target," Miller insisted. "If you vanish, they’ll know we have the ledger. You need to go back to work tomorrow and pretend everything is normal. Be the bait. Let them focus on you while we secure Sarah."

I looked at my twin sister, terrified and bruised. She nodded slowly. "Do it, Elena. Catch him."
