Chapter 18 - Rebuilding

A year later, the city had moved on, but our lives were permanently changed.
My suspension was lifted with full honors. I was promoted to Detective Sergeant, heading up a specialized task force dedicated to dismantling the remnants of the Petrov syndicate and handling high-profile domestic violence cases.
Sarah didn't just survive; she thrived. She finalized the divorce, stripping Mark of half his remaining legal assets, which she donated entirely to a women's shelter. She quit her corporate job and started her own consulting firm, helping survivors of financial abuse untangle their credit and regain their independence.
We were sitting on the balcony of my new apartment, watching the sunset paint the city skyline in brilliant shades of orange and purple. The air was warm, and a gentle breeze carried the sound of distant traffic.
"Do you ever think about him?" I asked, sipping a glass of wine.
Sarah looked at her hands, completely free of bruises. "Sometimes. But not with fear. Just with pity. He’s locked in a concrete box, looking over his shoulder every second of the day. And I’m sitting here, drinking wine with my best friend."
