Chapter 3 - The High-Priced Shark

I left Sarah under police guard at the hospital and drove straight to the precinct. I needed to see Mark sweat in the interrogation room.
When I looked through the two-way glass, I didn't see a broken man. I saw a monster who thought he was invincible. Mark was sitting at the metal table, sipping a bottle of water, completely unbothered. Sitting next to him was Richard Sterling, the most expensive, ruthless defense attorney in the city.
"My client is the victim of an orchestrated smear campaign," Sterling was telling the lead detective, a grizzled veteran named Carver. "Sarah Vance has a documented history of anxiety. She stopped taking her medication, became violent, and my client merely defended himself. Detective Vance’s involvement is a clear conflict of interest and an abuse of police power."
Carver scoffed. "She has hand-shaped bruises on her throat, counselor. Unless she choked herself from behind, your client is looking at Attempted Murder."
Mark leaned forward, his arrogant smirk returning. "She fell down the stairs, Detective. It was a tragedy. I tried to catch her."
I punched the reinforced glass, the sound echoing through the observation room. Mark flinched, looking at the mirror. He knew I was standing there.

"He's establishing a narrative," I muttered to the ADA standing next to me. "We need to hit him with everything we have at the arraignment."
"We will," the ADA promised. "But with Sterling on the case, don't hold your breath for a remand without bail."
