Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

The execution of Thorne sent a chilling message through Silas’s ranks. There was no room for error, no space for disloyalty. The compound was placed on absolute lockdown. Barricades were erected, and heavy munitions were distributed to every loyal guard.

The next morning, Silas's personal encrypted phone rang. The caller ID was blocked, but Silas knew who it was.

"Silas Vance," the heavily accented voice of Dimitri Volkov echoed through the speaker. "You have something that belongs to me. A drive, and the little rat who stole it."

"I have nothing that belongs to you, Dimitri," Silas replied, pouring himself a glass of bourbon. "But you have a lot of dead men on my lawn."

"You want to play savior? Fine," Dimitri snarled. "Tonight, I send my entire organization. We will level your estate. We will slaughter your men. I will take the drive, and I will put a bullet in that child's head while you watch. Surrender her now, and you live."

Silas looked out the window. Elara was sitting on the terrace, reading a picture book while leaning against Bane’s massive, rising and falling ribcage.

"Come get her," Silas said, and hung up the phone.
