Chapter 4

“My office. Now.”
Lucas didn't wait for her response. He strode into the manager’s glass-walled office, kicking the door shut behind him.
Bella’s hands shook as she bent down to pick up the files. Her oversized cardigan draped forward, concealing her bump. She took a deep breath, walked into the office, and closed the door.
“What kind of game are you playing?” Lucas demanded, his voice a low, lethal vibration. “You take fifty grand from me, and six months later you magically end up working at a company I’m acquiring?”
“I didn't know you were buying it,” Bella said, keeping her voice steady. “I’m an accountant. I needed a job.”
Lucas stepped closer, crowding her space. The scent of cedar and expensive whiskey invaded her senses, bringing back a violent rush of memories from room 6101. “I don't believe in coincidences, Bella. Who paid you to spy on me? Volkov? The Italians?”
“No one! I bury my head in spreadsheets all day.”

The stress was too much. The lack of air in the room, the suffocating presence of the father of her unborn child—Bella’s vision blurred. The edges of the room turned black. She swayed on her feet.
Lucas lunged forward, catching her before she hit the floor. As his large hands gripped her waist to steady her, his fingers brushed against the unmistakable, firm curve of her stomach beneath the wool sweater. He froze.
