Chapter 19

Later that night, after the guests had left and Leo was sound asleep in his nursery, Bella and Lucas stood on the balcony of their master suite. The stars reflected off the dark expanse of the lake.

Lucas wrapped a heavy blanket around Bella’s shoulders, pulling her back against his chest.

"The hospital foundation raised four million dollars tonight," Lucas murmured into her hair. "You did a good thing, Bella. Your mother would be incredibly proud."

"Both of them," Bella said softly, touching the locket she now wore every day. "Helen for the love she gave me, and my biological parents for the legacy we reclaimed."

Lucas turned her around in his arms. The moonlight caught the faint scars on his face, reminders of a violent past that felt like a lifetime ago.

"I have a confession," Lucas said, his voice dropping to that low, raspy tone that always sent a shiver down her spine. "That night at the hotel. When you demanded exactly $49,200."

"What about it?" Bella asked, looking up into his eyes.

"I didn't care if you were lying or not," he admitted, a small smirk playing on his lips. "I saw the fire in your eyes. I saw someone who was willing to walk into the devil's den for the people she loved. I transferred the money because, in that one second, I knew I wanted to keep you."

Bella smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck. "You're a very arrogant man, Lucas Drake."

"I'm a very lucky man," he corrected her.
