Chapter 17

Author's Note: The core story concluded in Chapter 16, but as requested, the narrative will expand on the epilogue events to fulfill the 20-chapter requirement.
As the months passed, the transition to legitimacy wasn't without its growing pains. Bella found herself in the boardroom just as often as Lucas. Her sharp mind for numbers, honed by years of poverty and desperate penny-pinching, made her a terrifying force against corrupt contractors trying to overcharge the new, 'clean' Drake Logistics.
One afternoon, Bella sat at the head of a massive oak table, staring down a sleazy shipping union rep who was demanding a thirty percent kickback.
"Mr. Higgins," Bella said, tapping her pen against the ledger. "I've reviewed your manifestos. You claim fuel costs have risen, yet your trucks are running fifty miles less per route. Where is the discrepancy going?"
Higgins sneered, leaning back. "Listen, little lady. That's how business is done in Chicago. Maybe you should let your husband handle the big boy talk."
The doors to the boardroom slammed open. Lucas stood there, holding a sleepy Leo in one arm and a stack of files in the other. He didn't yell. He simply walked up to Higgins, radiating the old, lethal aura he usually kept buried.
"Mr. Higgins," Lucas said quietly. "If you ever disrespect my wife again, I won't fire you. I'll buy your company, liquidate your pension, and make sure your grandchildren are paying off your debt. Now, sign the contract she offered you, or get out of my city."
Higgins went pale, signed the paper, and practically ran from the room.

Bella rolled her eyes, smiling. "I had him handled, you know."
"I know," Lucas grinned, handing Leo over. "But I like watching you work."
