Chapter 18

That evening, they hosted a charity gala at the estate. It was a massive event aimed at raising funds for Lakeshore County Hospital—the very hospital where Bella’s mother had passed away. Bella had bought out the hospital’s debt, completely revamping their financial assistance program for low-income families. No one would ever have to beg for a funeral bill again.

Bella wore a stunning emerald green gown, her hair swept up, looking every inch the queen of Chicago society. Lucas stood by her side in a classic tuxedo, unable to take his eyes off her.

During the silent auction, an older woman approached Bella. It was Debbie, the senior housekeeper from the hotel. Bella had tracked her down and hired her as the estate’s head of staff, doubling her salary and providing full benefits.

"You look beautiful, Bella," Debbie smiled, handing her a glass of sparkling cider. "I still can't believe the girl who took my shift that night ended up owning the building."

Bella laughed, glancing across the room at Lucas, who was currently letting a toddler Leo pull on his expensive bowtie.

"Sometimes, Debbie, desperate decisions lead us exactly where we are supposed to be," Bella said. "I went in there looking to bury my past. I ended up finding my future."

Debbie nodded wisely. "He's a good man, Bella. I know what people used to say about him. But look at him now."

Bella watched her husband, the former terror of the underworld, gently wipe a smear of chocolate off his son's nose. "He is," she agreed. "He truly is."
