Chapter 10

Inside the panic room, Bella could hear the muffled sounds of war. Explosions shook the foundation of the house. She held her stomach with one hand and the heavy pistol with the other, praying to a God she hadn't spoken to since her mother’s funeral.

Please let him come back. Please.

She hated him. He was a monster. But he was the father of her baby, and in this terrifying new world, he was her only shield.

An hour passed. Then, the heavy locking mechanism of the vault door began to spin. Bella raised the gun, her hands shaking violently.

The door swung open. Lucas stood there, covered in dust and blood. His suit was ruined, a deep slash running along his cheek, but his eyes were blazing with a terrifying, victorious fire.

“Are you hurt?” he demanded, rushing in and pulling her up. He didn't wait for an answer, his hands frantically checking her body, resting firmly over the baby.

“I’m fine. Who was it?”

“Russian mercenaries. Hired by Marcus.” Lucas’s jaw clenched. “The doctor talked. Marcus knows who you are. He knows about the baby. He realizes his claim to the throne is gone as long as you and that child draw breath.”

“What do we do?” Bella asked, her voice trembling.

“We don't do anything,” Lucas said, pulling her against his chest. It was the first time he had shown her any genuine tenderness. “You stay hidden. I’m going to tear Chicago down to the studs.”
