Chapter 3 - The Truth Revealed

Sylvia’s face went completely pale, realizing her ultimate secret had just been exposed in public.

“I don't know what you are talking about,” Sylvia stammered, looking around nervously to see if anyone was listening.

“Oh, please,” Sarah mocked, stepping closer to the older woman.

“I know that Marcus’s business went bankrupt two years ago, and I know Clara has been funding your entire lavish lifestyle ever since.”

Clara looked up at her mother in total shock, her tear-stained face registering absolute confusion.

“Mom, what are you talking about?” Clara asked softly.

“Marcus told me his business was booming, that I just needed to handle the household bills so he could reinvest his capital.”

Sarah turned to her daughter, her heart breaking for the years of deceit Clara had endured.

“He lied to you, sweetie,” Sarah explained gently.

“I hired a private investigator last month because things simply weren't adding up with your finances.”

“Marcus hasn't made a single dollar in two years, and he has been draining your tech-startup salary to pay for his mother’s country club memberships.”

Sylvia looked like she was going to be physically sick right there on the expensive hardwood floor.

“You had absolutely no right to look into our private family matters!” Sylvia screamed, completely losing her refined composure.

“She is my daughter, which makes her my business,” Sarah replied fiercely.

“And as of tonight, she is no longer your personal ATM.”

Sarah grabbed Clara’s purse and gently guided her daughter toward the restaurant's exit.

The evening air in Chicago felt crisp and clean, completely different from the suffocating atmosphere they had just left behind.

They got into Sarah’s car in silence, the weight of the evening pressing down heavily on both of them.

As soon as the car doors locked, Clara finally broke down completely.

She sobbed uncontrollably, mourning the man she thought she had married and the life she thought she was building.

“He made me feel so small, Mom,” Clara cried, burying her face in her hands.

“He convinced me that I was stupid, that I was lucky to have him, that no one else would ever put up with me.”

Sarah reached across the center console and pulled her daughter into a tight, comforting embrace.

“He is a parasite, Clara,” Sarah whispered into her hair.

“He made you feel small because it was the only way a weak man like him could feel big.”

“But it ends tonight.”
