Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

Eight months later, the federal courtroom in downtown Dallas was packed with reporters and onlookers.

Julian stood before the judge, wearing a bright orange jumpsuit instead of his usual tailored tuxedo.

He looked gaunt, pale, and terrified.

The prosecutor played the video of the wedding reception on a large monitor for the entire court to see.

The gasps from the jury box were audible as the footage showed Julian striking me across the face.

They saw the arrogance in his eyes, the cruel smirk on his lips, and the lacquered box of stolen keys.

Then, they heard the testimonies.

Victoria Sterling spoke eloquently about how he had destroyed her life and stolen her inheritance.

Thomas presented the mountain of forged documents and illegal wire transfers.

Finally, Elise took the stand.

She did not cry.

She looked Julian dead in the eye and described exactly how he had tried to exploit her love for her elderly father.

When the judge finally handed down the sentence, there was no mercy in his voice.

"Julian Thorne, for your numerous crimes against these families and the financial institutions of this state, I sentence you to thirty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of early parole."

Julian collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his manacled hands.

I did not feel joy or triumph as they led him out of the courtroom in chains.

I only felt a deep, abiding relief that the cancer had finally been removed from our lives.
