Chapter 3 - The Vault of Lies

We moved inside the manor, leaving Julian handcuffed to a patio chair under the watchful eye of the federal marshal.

I led Elise, Thomas, and Victoria into my private study.

The room smelled of old leather and the sweet pipe tobacco I used to smoke when Eleanor was still alive.

Thomas placed his heavy leather briefcase on my mahogany desk and popped the brass latches.

"Elise, I am incredibly sorry to show you this," Thomas began, pulling out a thick binder of financial records.

He laid out the irrefutable proof of Julian's true nature.

There were bank statements showing massive transfers to offshore gambling syndicates.

There were photographs of Julian meeting with the ruthless commercial developers who wanted to pave over our pastures.

Finally, Thomas produced the forged equity loan documents that Julian had tried to secure against the farm.

"He was going to bleed this estate dry and leave you completely bankrupt," Thomas explained gently.

Elise traced her trembling fingers over the forged signature on the loan application.

"He asked me for copies of the keys last week," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

"He said he wanted to surprise you by fixing up the old tractor barn so you could finally rest."

I reached across the desk and took my daughter's hand.

"He used your good heart against us, Elise."

"But he underestimated how fiercely I will protect this family."

Elise looked up, the betrayal in her eyes slowly hardening into a cold, inherited resolve.

She was an equestrian, a woman raised breaking wild horses and surviving Texas droughts.

The tears stopped falling.

"What happens to him now?" she asked, her voice steady and chillingly calm.
