Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

The next morning, the local precinct was buzzing with federal agents and local detectives.
Thomas and I sat behind the one-way glass of an interrogation room.
We watched Julian sitting at the metal table, covered in dried mud, his designer clothes ruined.
He looked small, pathetic, and utterly defeated.
An FBI agent walked into the room and tossed a thick file onto the table.
"Your hired friends talked, Julian," the agent stated coldly.
"They gave up the entire syndicate to avoid federal firearms charges."
Julian stared at the table, refusing to make eye contact.
"You are facing twenty years for the bank fraud, another ten for the bigamy, and now we are adding conspiracy to commit armed robbery," the agent continued.
"You are going to die in a concrete box."
Julian’s hands began to shake violently.
The arrogant predator who had slapped me at the wedding was completely gone.
"I want a deal," Julian whispered, his voice cracking.
"I can give you names."
"I can tell you exactly how the offshore accounts operate."
The agent laughed humorlessly and leaned over the table.
"We already have the accounts, Julian."
"Victoria Sterling provided everything we needed."
"You have nothing left to trade."

I turned away from the glass, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over me.
The monster had finally been caged.
