Chapter 2 - The Shattered Illusion

A black town car sped up the driveway, kicking up a cloud of white dust.

The rear door flew open before the vehicle even came to a complete stop.

My daughter, Elise, stumbled out into the morning light.

She was still wearing her reception dress, though the silk was wrinkled and her hair was in disarray.

She had spent the entire night frantically searching for Julian after he vanished from the hotel following my departure.

When she saw the federal marshal, the unmarked SUVs, and the strange woman standing on our porch, she froze.

"Dad?" Elise whispered, her tear-stained eyes locking onto mine as I stepped out of my truck.

I walked over to my daughter and wrapped my arms around her trembling shoulders.

"It is going to be alright, sweetheart," I promised her, though my heart broke for the pain she was about to endure.

Julian saw Elise and immediately tried to salvage his twisted narrative.

"Elise, they are setting me up!" he shouted, desperately trying to push past the federal marshal.

"Your father is insane, he hired these people to ruin us!"

Victoria turned around and looked at Elise with a mixture of profound pity and shared sorrow.

"He told me the exact same lies, Elise," Victoria said softly.

Victoria reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a certified marriage license from the state of Illinois.

She held it out for my daughter to see.

"My name is Victoria, and I have been married to the man you call Julian for four years."

Elise stared at the document, the color draining entirely from her beautiful face.

The reality of the situation crashed down on her all at once.

Her perfect wedding, her charming husband, her promised future—it was all a carefully constructed mirage.

Julian was nothing more than a parasitic predator, and she was simply his latest mark.
