Chapter 1 - The Ghost from the Past

The morning sun cast long, golden shadows across the gravel driveway of my estate.
Julian stood completely frozen on the wraparound porch.
The smug confidence that had dominated his face just hours ago was entirely gone.
In its place was a mask of absolute, paralyzing terror.
The woman stepping out of the third federal SUV was someone he believed he had buried deep in his past.
Her name was Victoria Sterling.
She was the heiress to a massive shipping fortune in Chicago, and more importantly, she was Julian’s legal wife.
Julian had drained her accounts, forged her signature on a dozen fraudulent loans, and left her for dead in a remote cabin three years ago.
He had never filed for divorce because he assumed her family’s shame would keep them quiet.
He was gravely mistaken.
Victoria walked up the porch steps with the cold, calculated grace of a woman who had spent years plotting this exact moment.
She ignored Julian completely and turned her piercing gaze toward the confused locksmith.
"You can pack up your tools," Victoria told the man, her voice ringing like a steel bell in the crisp morning air.
"This man has absolutely no legal authority to change these locks."
Julian finally found his voice, though it cracked like a terrified child's.
"Victoria, what are you doing here?" he stammered, backing away until his spine hit the solid oak of my front door.
Thomas Vance, my attorney, stepped onto the porch and handed Julian a thick stack of court documents.
"She is here to witness your arrest for bigamy, wire fraud, and attempted extortion," Thomas stated coldly.
The federal marshal moved forward, his hand resting casually on his utility belt.
"Julian Thorne, you are ordered to vacate these premises immediately under a federal injunction," the marshal commanded.

Julian’s eyes darted frantically around the property, looking for an escape route that did not exist.
His grand scheme to steal my family's legacy had just imploded before he could even turn a key.
