Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Bond

I returned to the farm just as the sun was beginning to set over the western ridge.
Elise was waiting for me on the front porch, holding two mugs of hot coffee.
She handed me one and sat down on the wooden swing, pulling a thick blanket over her legs.
"Is it really over?" she asked quietly, looking out at the grazing horses.
"It is," I confirmed, taking a sip of the bitter coffee.
"He is never going to hurt anyone ever again."
Elise let out a long, shaky breath and leaned her head against my shoulder.
"I am so incredibly sorry, Dad," she whispered, her voice breaking.
"I brought that poison into our home."
"I let him turn me against you."
I wrapped my arm around her and held her tight.
"You have absolutely nothing to apologize for, Elise."
"He was a professional manipulator who preyed on your beautiful, trusting nature."
"The only thing that matters is that you are safe, and this family is still standing."
We sat in silence for a long time, watching the sky turn brilliant shades of orange and purple.
The ranch felt different tonight.
The heavy, suffocating shadow that Julian had cast over our lives was finally lifted.
