Chapter 9 - The Final Trap

The boardroom erupted. The executives scrambled for the documents, their eyes widening as they saw the undeniable proof of Clara’s massive embezzlement and the syndicate's assassination orders.
Clara realized it was over. But she wasn't going to rot in prison.
With lightning speed, Clara lunged across the table. She pulled a small, pearl-handled derringer pistol from her designer purse and grabbed Lily, pressing the barrel of the gun to the little girl's head.
"Nobody moves!" Clara screamed, backing toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "Drop the gun, Thorne! Or I blow the kid's brains out!"
Mrs. Gable screamed, stepping forward, but Thorne held her back. He slowly lowered his rifle to the floor.
"You're not getting out of here, Clara," Thorne said calmly. "The building is surrounded by the FBI. Vance called them in."
"I have a helicopter on the roof," Clara spat, dragging Lily backward. "I'm taking the girl. Once I'm out of airspace, I'll drop her."

Lily looked at Mrs. Gable. She wasn't crying. She remembered what Arthur had taught her in his secret lessons. Never let them see you panic.
As Clara reached blindly behind her to press the button for the private executive elevator, Lily stomped her heel down as hard as she could onto Clara's instep.
