Chapter 6 - The Inside Man

Sterling Tower was a seventy-story fortress of glass and steel in the heart of the financial district. Clara’s mercenaries had locked down every entrance.
A black SUV idled three blocks away. Thorne peered through binoculars. "It's a suicide mission, Mrs. Gable. They have thirty armed men in the lobby."
"We have to get to the 70th floor," Mrs. Gable insisted. "The board is voting to hand the company to Clara in one hour. If they sign the merger, the syndicate legally washes the money. We can't let Arthur's legacy become a criminal enterprise."
Lily, sitting in the backseat with her pink toy phone, looked up. "Mr. Arthur told me a secret about the building once."
Both adults looked at her.
"He said the garbage trucks don't stop. They go straight into the basement tubes," Lily explained.

Thorne smiled, a dangerous, wolfish grin. "The pneumatic waste system. It bypasses the lobby entirely."
They hijacked a private waste management truck. Thorne dealt with the drivers with ruthless efficiency, tying them up in an alley. Mrs. Gable and Lily hid in the empty, sanitized secondary cargo hold. As the truck rolled past Clara's heavily armed perimeter and down into the subterranean loading docks, the real war began.
