Chapter 2 - The Billionaire's Secret

Two hours later, the chaotic courthouse was replaced by the dead silence of the police precinct's secure conference room. Mrs. Gable sat beside Lily, holding the little girl's hand as Detective Vance slid a silver letter opener across the table.

Lily took it. With steady hands that didn't belong on an eight-year-old, she broke the wax seal. Inside was a single piece of heavy parchment and a small, silver key.

Mrs. Gable read the letter aloud, her voice trembling.

"My dearest Lily. If you are reading this, it means I am dead, and Clara has likely tried to destroy Mrs. Gable. I knew they were poisoning me. I knew Clara and her associates were slowly shutting down my organs. But I could not fight back, because if I exposed them too soon, they would have killed you."

Mrs. Gable gasped, covering her mouth.

"You are not an orphan, Lily," the letter continued. "You are not the daughter of a maid who passed away. You are my biological granddaughter. Your father was my secret son, murdered by Clara's syndicate ten years ago. I hid your identity to keep you safe. Clara married me to take the Sterling Empire, but she didn't know I rewrote the trust. The silver key in this envelope opens a vault at the First National Depository. Inside is the proof of Clara's syndicate, and the legal transfer of my entire fifty-billion-dollar empire... to you."

The room spun. Mrs. Gable looked at Lily. The little girl wasn't crying. She was staring at the silver key.

"Mrs. Gable," Detective Vance said, his face pale. "If Clara's people find out this girl is the true heir... they won't stop at framing you. They will kill her."
