Chapter 5 - The Hospital Scare

The immense stress of the situation finally took a physical toll on my body.

At thirty-four weeks pregnant, I woke up in the middle of the night with sharp, agonizing cramps shooting across my lower abdomen.

My mother rushed into my bedroom, took one look at my pale, sweating face, and immediately called an ambulance.

The ride to the hospital was a blur of flashing red lights and terrifying pain.

Dr. Keller was already waiting for me in the emergency room when the paramedics wheeled my stretcher through the sliding glass doors.

"Your blood pressure is dangerously high, Claire," Dr. Keller said, quickly administering medication through an IV line.

"We need to stop these contractions before the baby comes too early."

By some absolute miracle, the medication worked, and my body slowly began to relax.

I was moved to a quiet, private observation room on the maternity ward to rest for the remainder of the week.

However, the peace was shattered the very next morning.

I woke up to the sound of shouting echoing from the hospital corridor outside my door.

"I am the father! I have a legal right to be in that room!" Ryan's voice roared, echoing off the linoleum floors.

"You lost that right when you served her divorce papers at a baby shower, you piece of garbage!" my father bellowed back.

I pushed myself up in the hospital bed, watching through the small glass window in the door.

Hospital security guards were actively wrestling Ryan against the wall, trying to subdue him.

Diane was standing a few feet away, clutching her pearl necklace and screaming that they were going to sue the hospital.

The police arrived within minutes, placing both Ryan and Diane in handcuffs for disturbing the peace and trespassing.

I watched them being escorted away, feeling absolutely nothing but cold, hard indifference.
