Chapter 10 - A New Chapter

Two years have passed since the most dramatic baby shower in recorded history.
I am sitting on the back porch of my newly purchased home, sipping a hot cup of tea as the morning sun rises.
Leo is a happy, energetic toddler, currently running across the green grass and chasing a yellow butterfly.
I finalized the divorce entirely on my terms, securing my financial future and completely protecting my son.
Ryan comes around every other weekend for his court-ordered, supervised visits.
He always looks tired, completely devoid of the arrogant spark he used to carry.
He reads books to Leo and brings him small, inexpensive toys, but there is a permanent, thick wall of distance between us.
He knows he will never be the primary father figure, and he knows he permanently ruined his own life.
I never rub it in his face; his miserable reality is punishment enough.
As for me, I have never been happier or more at peace with my existence.
I went back to work as an interior designer, a career Ryan had always rudely dismissed as a silly hobby.
My business is absolutely thriving, and I am entirely self-sufficient.
Sometimes, I look back at that horrible afternoon in the backyard with the pink balloons swaying in the wind.
Diane thought she was destroying my life when she tapped that silver spoon against her champagne glass.

In reality, she was accidentally handing me the key to my absolute freedom.
I smile, watching my beautiful son laugh in the warm sunlight, knowing the future is entirely ours.
