Chapter 1 - The Doctor's Secret
I sat upright in my childhood bed, the cold sweat clinging to my skin as I replayed the voicemail.
Dr. Hannah Keller was a woman.
Ryan and his mother had been so blinded by their own toxic assumptions that they hadn't even bothered to look up my doctor's first name.
They saw "Dr. Keller" on the insurance statements and immediately fabricated a scandalous affair in their minds.
But the most terrifying part of the voicemail wasn't the gender mix-up; it was the mention of a falsified medical report.
I grabbed my laptop and immediately searched the phone number Dr. Keller had called from.
It matched her private office line, proving this was not a prank or a misunderstanding.
I checked the time on my phone, watching the digital numbers glow at 4:15 in the morning.
I couldn't wait until regular business hours.
I dialed the number back, my hands shaking so violently that I almost dropped the phone.
To my absolute shock, Dr. Keller answered on the second ring.
"Claire, I am so sorry for calling you this late, but I couldn't sleep after I saw the file," she said, her voice filled with genuine concern.
"What file?" I asked, my throat feeling dry and completely raw.
"Your husband's mother, Diane, requested a copy of Ryan's fertility records last year by forging his signature on a release form," Dr. Keller explained.
"She paid a medical assistant at the front desk to alter the results before they were mailed out."
My stomach dropped as the sheer scale of Diane's manipulation became clear.
"But why?" I whispered, struggling to comprehend such evil.
"Because the original report showed that Ryan is perfectly fertile, Claire," Dr. Keller said gently.
"Diane wanted him to believe he was sterile so that when you inevitably got pregnant, he would think you cheated."
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me.
"You mentioned another patient on the voicemail," I recalled, gripping the edge of the blanket.
