Chapter 2 - The Brothers' Divide

The revelation about Michael hit me like a physical blow to the chest.
Michael had stood up at the baby shower and defended me, exposing his mother's cruelty.
He had no idea that Diane had stolen his tragic medical reality and weaponized it against my marriage.
As the sun began to rise over my parents' quiet suburban street, I formulated a plan.
I could not let Ryan get away with humiliating me in front of our entire social circle.
I got dressed in a comfortable maternity dress and walked downstairs to find my father already brewing coffee.
"I'm going to the clinic," I told him, accepting a warm mug from his hands.
"I'm coming with you," my dad stated firmly, leaving absolutely no room for debate.
We arrived at Dr. Keller's private practice just as the front doors were being unlocked.
Dr. Keller ushered us into her back office, handing me a thick, yellow envelope containing the unedited, original medical files.
"I have already fired the assistant who took the bribe, and I am legally obligated to report this tampering to the medical board," Dr. Keller informed us.
"Diane is going to face criminal charges for fraud."
I thanked her profoundly, taking the heavy envelope that held the key to my total vindication.
When my dad and I walked out to the parking lot, I saw a familiar car idling near the entrance.
It was Michael.
He stepped out of his vehicle, looking completely exhausted, with dark circles hanging heavily under his eyes.
"Claire, please wait," Michael called out, holding his hands up in a peaceful gesture.
"I came here to apologize for my family, and to give you something."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a stack of printed emails.
"I hacked into my mother's computer last night after the shower exploded," Michael confessed.

"She has been planning this public humiliation for six months."
I took the papers, my eyes scanning the hateful messages Diane had sent to her friends about destroying my life.
