Chapter 3 - Standing Ground

Justin did not call the police, but he did show up at Luke’s driveway three hours later.
He hammered his fists against the heavy oak front door, screaming my name.
Mark opened the door just wide enough to block the entrance with his massive frame.
"Step back from the property, Justin, or I will drop you right here on the porch," Mark warned in a deadly, low voice.
Justin sneered, trying to look past my brother's broad shoulders to find me.
"Tell my crazy wife to bring my daughter out here right now!" Justin yelled.

I held Maya tightly against my chest, staring at the man I once thought I loved.
Justin pointed a trembling, aggressive finger at my face.
"Apologize to Vanessa, bring Maya home, and maybe I will forgive you for this ridiculous stunt," he demanded.
I looked at him with absolute disgust, marveling at his sheer audacity.
"You watched your mistress assault your wife and child, and you want an apology?" I asked coldly.
His face flushed dark red with unhinged anger.
"One more stunt like this, and I'll get full custody," he threatened, stepping forward.
I didn't flinch, didn't cry, and didn't back down.
I looked him dead in the eyes and calmly replied, "Tell that to the judge."
Mark slammed the heavy door right in his face.

We stood in the foyer, listening to his tires squeal as he angrily sped away from the neighborhood.
The war had officially started, and Justin had no idea how badly he was outmatched.
