Chapter 2 - The Army Assembles

The night at Luke’s house stretched into a cold, unforgiving dawn.
I sat at the expansive granite kitchen island, staring blankly at the glowing screen of my laptop.
The wire transfers I had found were just the surface of a deep, rot-filled ocean.
My youngest brother, Mark, walked into the kitchen and silently placed a steaming mug of black coffee in front of me.
He had been awake all night, making quiet calls to his private security contacts.
"He’s hiding more than money, Clara," Mark said softly.
I nodded, feeling a strange, icy calm washing over my initial heartbreak.
For three years, Justin had manipulated me into believing we were struggling financially.
He had constantly criticized my spending, making me feel guilty for buying premium baby formula for Maya.
All while he was funneling four thousand dollars a month into a luxury apartment for his mistress.
My phone suddenly buzzed on the counter, shattering the morning silence.
It was a text message from Justin.
"Where are you?
Come home right now, or I am calling the police for kidnapping."
I stared at the threatening words, feeling my pulse quicken.
Before I could type a response, Luke walked into the kitchen, fully dressed in his tailored legal suit.
He snatched the phone from my hand and read the message with a dark, terrifying smirk.
"Let him call them," Luke said, adjusting his tie.
"The police already have the assault report from the clinic, complete with witness statements."
Nathan, my doctor brother, entered the room holding little Maya, who was finally sleeping peacefully after her fever broke.
"Maya is perfectly fine, but her father is about to need life support when we are done with him," Nathan whispered.

I took a deep breath, realizing I was no longer a victim.
I was a mother protecting her child, and I had an army standing right behind me.
