Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Climax

Six months later, we were back in a courtroom, but this time, Greg and I were in the gallery.
Lauren and my father were sitting at the defendant's table.
The district attorney had brought felony charges against both of them.
My father was charged with bribery, fraud, and obstruction of justice.
Lauren was charged with felony child abandonment and reckless endangerment.
The trial was brief because the evidence was overwhelming.
Nurse Elena’s meticulous notes proved Lauren’s guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt.
David took the stand and testified about the wedding audio and the bribe my father offered him.
When the judge handed down the sentence, there was no mercy.
My father was sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in the corruption.
Lauren was given a three-year sentence, with a chance of early parole if she completed psychiatric counseling.
My mother sat on the other side of the courtroom, weeping loudly as her husband and daughter were led away in handcuffs.
She looked at me, hoping for a shred of sympathy.
I gave her none.

I held Greg’s hand and walked out of the courtroom with my head held high.
Justice had finally been served for the little baby left in the freezing snow.
