Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Ally

We met David at a crowded coffee shop across town.

He looked exhausted, nervously glancing at the door every time someone walked in.

“I didn't take the money,” David assured us immediately.

“But they froze my bank accounts and shut down my business website this morning.”

Greg bought him a coffee and slid it across the table.

“Why are you risking so much for us?” Greg asked gently.

David pulled out a worn photograph from his wallet.

It showed a beautiful young nurse smiling in a hospital hallway.

“My sister, Elena, found Sophie in that freezing parking lot,” David explained, his voice breaking.

“Elena held her all night, trying to keep her warm until the doctors arrived.”

He wiped a tear from his eye.

“Elena died of cancer two years ago,” David continued.

“Before she passed, she told me that her biggest regret was not knowing what happened to that beautiful little girl.”

I covered my mouth, tears welling in my own eyes.

“When I was hired for the wedding, I recognized your father from old news broadcasts,” David said.

“I did some digging and found the agency records that connected Lauren to the abandoned baby.”

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a manila envelope.

“These are Elena’s original hospital notes,” David said, handing it to me.

“She documented the exact blanket Lauren used, which proves Lauren was the one who left her there.”

This was the smoking gun we needed.
