Chapter 8 - The Empire Crumbles

The fallout from the viral post was immediate and devastating for my family.

Trevor’s parents went into full damage control mode.

They publicly distanced themselves from Lauren and my father.

Trevor filed for an annulment less than forty-eight hours after the story broke.

He claimed he was defrauded into the marriage by a woman hiding a criminal past.

My father tried to hold a press conference to deny the allegations.

But David, the brave photographer, showed up and played the audio recording loudly from a portable speaker.

The reporters swarmed my father, demanding answers about the bribed adoption agency.

The police also took notice.

Child abandonment is a serious felony, and there is no statute of limitations on child endangerment in our state.

Detectives reopened the seven-year-old case of the baby found in the snow.

My mother called me, screaming into the phone that I had ruined their lives.

“You ruined your own lives,” I told her calmly.

“You built an empire on lies, and now it is falling apart.”

I hung up and permanently blocked her number.

The custody lawsuit was abruptly dropped by their lawyers, who no longer wanted to be associated with a criminal investigation.
