Chapter 4 - The Injunction
The next morning, a process server knocked on our door.
He handed Greg a thick stack of legal documents.
My father had not been bluffing.
He and Trevor’s family had filed an emergency injunction against us.
They were demanding the immediate return of "stolen private property," referring to the photographer’s files.
More terrifyingly, they had filed a petition for emergency custody of Sophie.
They claimed we had kidnapped the child.
“This is insane,” Greg said, pacing the living room floor.
“They abandoned her, and now they want to take her back just to silence us?”
I immediately called the best family law attorney in the city, a woman named Sarah Jenkins.
When Sarah arrived and reviewed the documents, her expression grew grim.
“Trevor’s family has unlimited funds,” Sarah explained honestly.
“They are going to drag this out in court to drain your bank accounts.”
“But we have proof that Lauren abandoned her!” I argued.
“A civil judge might seal that evidence to protect the wealthy family’s privacy,” Sarah warned.
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me.
They were trying to use their money to literally buy my daughter from me.
Just then, my phone rang with an unknown number.
I answered it cautiously.
“Megan, it’s David, the photographer,” the voice said quickly.
“I need to meet you right now.”
“Why?” I asked, my heart pounding.

“Because your father just offered me half a million dollars to testify that I forged the documents,” David revealed.
“And if I refuse, he said I would never work again.”
